Analog optical transmission systems

A Hybrid Fiber Coax (HFC) network is the most common architecture used by cable operators. The HFC network consists of two main areas: fiber and coax. In the optical area beyond a hub there are devices which belong to transmitting optics responsible for downstream transmission to optical nodes and upstream reception in the return path.

Passive elements combine and divide optical signals, and also manage the optical path (fiber management).

Current trends in modern HFC network deployment cause replacement of coaxial trunk cables with optical fiber cables giving the operators the following advantages:

long distance (up to 40 km in 1310 nm technology or more than 110 km in 1550 nm technology);
high signal transmission quality and superb system parameter stability;
high system reliability and immunity to external factors (e.g. temperature changes, electromagnetic interference);
integration possibility of many scattered headends;
the deployment of inter-town network structures by connecting distant local networks;
throughput/bandwidth increase due to DWDM technology and optical node enhancement;
maintenance cost reduction due to the replacement coaxial trunk cables with optical fiber trunk cables and reduction of the active element number.
