Compression and transmission systems
The growth of digital TV market and the bigger popularity of thematic channels and local programs lead to the great complexity of contribution and distribution systems. The transmission of compressed digital TV programs in backbone networks, based on the ATM/SDH architecture, allows the usage of fast, bi-directional backbone links for TV content contribution and distribution between a central studio and regional centers.
Thanks to the Internet expansion, the networks based on the IP protocol are more often used to provide fast data, telephony and TV. The transmission of compressed digital TV programs based on the IP protocol allows the transfer of programs from the place of their origin to a reception point via the public IP networks.
Content contribution from regional centers to a central studio gives a high quality content for further processing and program preparation. The content can be transmitted in real time. Distribution of the program bouquet from the central studio to the regional centers, terrestrial TV transmitters or cable TV headends can be done in ATM/SDH or IP networks.
Digital TV program transmission in ATM/SDH/IP networks has the following advantages:

Digital TV program transmission in ATM/SDH/IP networks has the following advantages:
- the possibility of TV programs over long distances by existing backbone networks
- lower transmission costs and a wider bandwidth (available on demand) for program transmission in comparison with satellite links
- only one access point to the network for bi-directional transmission between a central studio and a regional center
- high level of transmission security and reliability
- high transmission quality provided by mechanisms implemented in ATM networks
